Unicom: 3G to See ROI in 5-10 Yrs
China Unicom (NYSE:CHU, 762.HK, 600050.SH) Chairman Chang Xiaobing said bulky 3G network construction costs have put pressure on the company, but, since 3G construction is cheaper than 2G, the company expects to earn back its investment in 5-10 years, reports Sina. Without breaking out 2G and 3G investment, Chang said 2009 network construction costs would come to RMB 95 billion, according to another Sina report.
Earlier, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) Director Li Yizhong said that fixed-asset 3G investment from China's top three telecom operators was expected to exceed RMB 170 billion in 2009.
