CPPCC Member: PV Use Could Create Millions of Jobs
Domestic demand only accounts for 2% of domestic solar cell production, and China's photovoltaic (PV) industry could create several million new jobs and trillions of yuan in sales once domestic demand gets going, reports China Industrial Economy News quoting Zhu Jianmin, a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and chairman of chemical and silicon cutting fluid producer Liaoning Oxiranchem Group.
China's total solar cell and module production had reached 1.088GW and 1.717GW, respectively, by late 2007, but application lagged far behind with 20MW of new installation in 2007 and 100MW of total installation by the end of that year, said Zhu. According to Zhu, the domestic PV industry employed 40,000 people and generated sales of RMB 50 billion in 2006; the numbers rose to 100,000 people and RMB 100 billion in 2007, and 200,000 and RMB 200 billion in 2008.
The government should stimulate the domestic market with favorable policies, encourage large-scale development and PV use, and set up projects, loans and subsidies for independent and on-grid photovoltaics, said Zhu.
