At a January 19 meeting with all Google (Nasdaq:GOOG) China staff, Google Vice President Alan Eustace announced that Google plans to retain its China research and development center and may continue some of its Chinese business, even if its negotiations with the Chinese government over censoring search results turn out for the worst, reports New Express. Google announced in July 2005 that it planned to open a product R&D center in China led by Dr. Kai-fu Lee.

Eustace said that he hoped Google China employees could remain calm and continue with their normal work. Google has not yet made a final decision, he said.

Google said January 12 that it is no longer willing to continue censoring search results on Google.cn, the company's Chinese search site, and could possibly face shutting down Google.cn and its Chinese offices, according to a statement posted on Google's official blog by company Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond.

Foreign companies in China should abide by China's laws and regulations, respect the Chinese people's interests and cultural traditions, and shoulder social responsibilities accordingly, Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu said January 19. Google is of course no exception, said Ma.
