China's online game industry generated revenues of RMB 25.8 billion in 2009, representing 39.5% year-on-year growth, people.com.cn reported January 18 quoting an online game industry report released by China's Ministry of Culture (MoC). Of the total, sales from domestically developed online games reached RMB 15.78 billion, up 41.9% year-on-year, the report said. Revenues from MMORPGs reached RMB 20.38 billion, or 79% of overall revenues, while high-level casual games generated RMB 3.55 billion, or 13.8% of the total market, having expanded 49.7% year-on-year, the report said.

Tencent (0700.HK) replaced Shanda (Nasdaq:SNDA) as the domestic operator with greatest market share last year, while NetEase (Nasdaq:NTES) is the country's third largest game operator. Between them, the three companies accounted for 52.9% of China's overall games market in 2009, the report said.

In 2009, China recorded $106 million from game exports, up 47.2% year-on-year, the report said.

General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) Deputy Director Sun Shoushan said in late July 2009 that China's online game industry sales would climb 30-50% in 2009 to between RMB 24 billion and RMB 27 billion.
