Baidu Plots South HQ, Rumors Fly on New Services
According to Baidu (Nasdaq:BIDU) Chairman and CEO Robin Li, the company intends to locate its South China headquarters in Shenzhen and expand its business in Southeast Asia in the future, reports Shenzhen Special Zone Daily quoting Li during an October 8 visit to Shenzhen.
An unnamed insider claims that the company is quietly conducting small-scale tests of a music-listening service that would play audio content when users search song titles in the Baidu search bar, reports qq.com.
Another rumor on Monday claimed that Baidu plans to contract up to ten employees from game portal 178.com to take charge of operation and maintenance of Baidu's game channel, game.baidu.com, reports Sina quoting an unnamed insider. Baidu will retain responsibility for ad sales on the portal, with 178.com taking a small share of ad revenue, said the report. The new Baidu game channel is expected to go online on Wednesday with a notice that it is "powered by 178.com," said the report.
An unnamed executive from 178.com confirmed the news, commenting that the partnership is not aimed at earning money or redirecting Baidu traffic to its own site, said the report. Baidu had no comment, the report said.
