China's General Administration of Press and Publications (GAPP) issued a notice saying that it has halted its review of NetEase's (Nasdaq:NTES) licensed 3D MMORPG World of Warcraft (The Burning Crusade) and returned the company's application to operate the game in China, according to the China Press and Publishing Journal. GAPP has also asked NetEase affiliate EaseNet to halt charging and new account registration, calling it "illegal behavior," the report said. The administration will punish the company by methods including suspension of its Internet service, the report said.

A GAPP director said that it allowed EaseNet to start closed beta testing on July 30 on condition that it did not charge gamers and did not allow new account registration. The director said EaseNet then started charging and new account registration on September 19 without GAPP permission.
