NetEase Resumes "WoW," GAPP Unaware
NetEase (Nasdaq:NTES) resumed official operation of its licensed 3D MMORPG World of Warcraft (WoW) in mainland China on September 19, the company announced the same day. All domestic gamers were able to begin adding money to their accounts and registering for new WoW and "Battle.net" multiplayer platform accounts on the same day, said the announcement.
NetEase has also finished preparation of its version of "Wrath of the Lich King," the second expansion of WoW, and will submit it for government review as soon as possible, the announcement said.
Gamers will be able to retrieve game time that they paid for before the interruption but have not yet used, and former gamers meeting certain requirements will be given a virtual pet, the announcement said.
NetEase offered free play to existing WoW gamers between September 6 and September 14, after completing WoW closed beta on September 5.
Kou Xiaowei, deputy director of the General Administration of Press and Publications' (GAPP) digital and online publishing department, said on September 19 that he was unaware that NetEase had opened server groups for WoW. Kou did not respond as to whether NetEase had submitted documents for GAPP's investigation of its joint venture with Blizzard Entertainment, reports ccw.com.cn.
