According to a China Unicom (NYSE:CHU, 762.HK, 600050.SH) insider, the company plans to start commercial operation of its 3G service on September 28 and targets 6.5 million 3G users by February 28, 2010, reports Cctime.com. An unnamed insider said the new service will not charge long distance or roaming fees, said the report.

Unicom plans to release the Chinese version of the Apple (Nasdaq:AAPL) iPhone in late September or early October, reports Ycwb.com. Other domestic media reports, including Sina, quoted an "authoritative" insider as saying that Unicom will announce the iPhone's release on Friday.

A company spokesperson said Unicom plans to discuss iPhone sales in a press conference for its interim report, to be released on Friday, reports Sina. The spokesperson did not say whether the announcement would touch on the iPhone agreement, said the report.
