Report: WoW Gamers Migrate to Taiwan

Mainland players of World of Warcraft (WoW) are migrating to Taiwan servers en masse, reports Sina citing Taiwanese media reports. The report said the migration is causing nightly traffic jams around 7 p.m., with some queues exceeding 1,000 accounts and causing waits of three to four hours. Mainland China's two largest game guilds have announced their move to Taiwan servers, said the report.

Soft-World International (5478.TW), WoW's Taiwan operator, public relations chief Zheng Weifang estimates that mainland gamers made up less than 10% of players on Taiwan servers before the game's second expansion, "Wrath of the Lich King", was released and that mainland gamers currently do not exceed 15% of the total. As a result of the gamer influx, Soft-World International opened one WoW server group per month in April and May, to reach a total of 34 groups, and suspended its free experience card service, said Zheng.

Soft-World Chairman Wang Junbo said he believes Blizzard Entertainment, the game's developer, will clarify the situation for players after June 7.

Shanghai-based online game company The9 (Nasdaq:NCTY) is licensed to operate World of Warcraft until June 7, after which NetEase (Nasdaq:NTES) becomes the game's mainland operator.
