Source: Alipay Tests Mobile Payment Software
Alibaba's online payment tool Alipay has begun internal testing of its mobile client-end software based on Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT) Windows Mobile operating system, Sina reported May 26 quoting an unnamed insider. According to an Alipay employee, an internal email sent last weekend describes the software as supporting Windows Mobile versions 5 and 6, and allows customers to check transaction details and account balances, and purchase goods through Alibaba's consumer-focused e-commerce site Taobao.com as well as other websites, the report said. There is no timetable for public release, said the report.
Alipay may also be planning to develop Symbian- and Java-based software, said an unnamed source. A 163.com report quoted an unnamed source as saying that Alipay may partner with Nokia (NYSE:NOK) and MediaTek to release handsets with preinstalled Alipay client-end software. Alipay's public relations department refused to comment.
Alipay said in early May that it will begin promoting its mobile payment services this year after more than one year of preparation. Rumors suggested that Alibaba Group had agreed to invest $12 million in Guangzhou-based mobile browser developer UCWeb.
